Derek the Ram

Derek Lam, winner of Vogue's CFDA awards two years in a row, is a media darling and socialite favorite but he is just not living up to my expectations of late. I loved the floaty dresses of the last two seasons but his fall collection is dreadful at best. As for his new line of bags inspired by his astrological sign, Aries, I have mixed feelings. I mean what's there to say about wearing your astrology sign on your bag? Cheesy. What about when you wear someone else's astrology sign on your bag? Stupid and Cheesy. That said, there are things I do like about the bags, the leather looks very soft and the shape is nice. I even like the '80s vibe going on with the gold chains even though I think the green Persephone with all leather strap is cuter, I JUST DON'T LIKE THE GIANT RAM head door knockers. But I still have faith in Derek, he's a talented young designer trying to find his way out of the 1 bedroom apartment he shares with his partner (paid for by income tax refunds from the company's losses, models in his shows are usually paid in clothes instead of greenbacks) and we'd like to support him so he doesn't cave in to the evil conglomerates hovering at his door.(Plus he is such a sweetheart and declared The Bag Snob a fresh ingenue when we met) So if you're into astrology and have $1995 to blow on a new bag, go for it!
